Book Summary:

In translating Charles Perrault's seventeenth-century Histoires ou contes du temps passé, avec des Moralités into English, Angela Carter worked to modernize the language and message of the tales before rewriting many of them for her own famous collection of fairy tales for adults, The Bloody Chamber, published two years later. In Reading, Translating, Rewriting: Angela Carter's Translational Poetics, author Martine Hennard Dutheil de la Rochère delves into Carter's The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1977) to illustrate that this translation project had a significant impact on Carter's own writing practice. Hennard combines close analyses of both texts with an attention to Carter's active role in the translation and composition process to explore this previously unstudied aspect of Carter's work. She further uncovers the role of female fairy-tale writers and folktales associated with the Grimms' Kinder- und Hausmärchen in the rewriting process, unlocking new doors to The Bloody Chamber. Hennard begins by considering the editorial evolution of The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault from 1977 to the present day, as Perrault's tales have been rediscovered and repurposed. In the chapters that follow, she examines specific linkages between Carter's Perrault translation and The Bloody Chamber, including targeted analysis of the stories of Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss-in-Boots, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella. Hennard demonstrates how, even before The Bloody Chamber, Carter intervened in the fairy-tale debate of the late 1970s by reclaiming Perrault for feminist readers when she discovered that the morals of his worldly tales lent themselves to her own materialist and feminist goals. Hennard argues that The Bloody Chamber can therefore be seen as the continuation of and counterpoint to The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault, as it explores the potential of the familiar stories for alternative retellings. While the critical consensus reads into Carter an imperative to subvert classic fairy tales, the book shows that Carter valued in Perrault a practical educator as well as a proto-folklorist and went on to respond to more hidden aspects of his texts in her rewritings.

Book Summary:

How it all Started It all started, or I guess you could say it did, on the last week of summer when most kids would be ending their vacations at the beach or getting back home from visiting their relatives, and, of course, dreading the thought of the coming of the new school year. However, some are not quite as lucky in that area as others are, like those who attended the same school as the main character of this book. It was on that day that a thirteen-year-old boy woke up and stared out of the window of his small bleak room. His skin was a light brown almost caramel complexion, and his hair was short and black, pressed down against his scalp. His eyes were a dark brown, with a ring of black edged around the Pupil. If you looked closely in the center of the darkness there was a small spark of golden light, barely noticeable, like staring at the heart of the Universe through an infinite expanse of space.

Book Summary:

The book is about the relationship between the Lakota Sioux, the US Army, the US Government, and the slow and methodical destruction of the Lakota way of life. The books start at the California Gold Rush and describe the first-person narrative of events such as the battle of Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee. American Manifest Destiny was the guide that governed the policy and attitude toward the Lakota, which led to misunderstandings, mistrust, and war. The book exposes the reasons for the actions of the Lakota and the US Army. It exposes the human stories that shaped the era from 1849 to 1891. It also exposes the stories within a story and some minor characters of history that were not headlined in history books. It is a concise account of forty-one years of turbulence on the American Plains that shaped American lives forever.

Book Summary:

From Ovid’s Lycaon to Professor Lupin, from Teen Wolf to An American Werewolf in Paris, the lycanthrope, or werewolf, comes to us frequently on the page and the silver screen. These interpretations often display lycanthropy as a curse, with the afflicted person becoming an uncontrollable, feral beast during every full moon. But this is just one version of the werewolf—its origins can be traced back thousands of years to early prehistory, and everything from Iron Age bog bodies and Roman gods to people such as Joan of Arc, Adolf Hitler, and Sigmund Freud feature in its story. Exploring the role of this odd assortment of ideas and people in the myth, The White Devil tracks the development of the werewolf from its birth to the present day, seeking to understand why the wolf curse continues to hold a firm grip on the modern imagination. Combining early death and burial rites, mythology, folklore, archaeological evidence, and local superstitions, Matthew Beresford explains that the werewolf has long been present in the beliefs and mythology of the many cultures of Europe. He examines prehistoric wolf cults, the use of the wolf as a symbol of ancient Rome, medieval werewolf executions, and the eradication of wolves by authorities in England during the Anglo-Saxon period. He also surveys werewolf trials, medical explanations, and alleged sightings, as well as the instances in which lycanthropes appear in literature and film. With sixty illustrations of these often terrifying—but sometimes noble—beasts, The White Deviloffers a new understanding of the survival of the werewolf in European culture.

Book Summary:

It was a time of happiness, but it was also a time of fear as the white wolf cubs are born into the Wilds. Animals of all sorts begin streaming into the Wilds; fleeing the violence of the black wolves. Tor and his army have been gone for months checking to see if the rumors of the refugees were true. Were there still black wolves out there? Somewhere in the distance were the Blackstone Mountains. Is that what the wind was telling him, warning him about? Yes, it was speaking to him about things that no animal, wolf, or otherwise could stop. Tor and his army are captured by Warrior and Snuffer, who lived through the avalanche brought on by the oryx during the Blackstone War. Tor is to be executed for stealing the land called the Wilds and killing Deuce and Staver. Khoa sets out to find Tor. While he is gone, his son, Tristian, and Tor’s son, Challenger, are taken hostage along with other animals. Saved from drowning in their cages by a young raccoon, the two pups set out to make it back to the Wilds. Everyone, from Pieces and his ‘wild bunch,’ to the black wolves are in on the search for the stolen cubs. Tristian and Challenger meet friends and foes along their trek across the Black Lake Road. Just as it seems they will make it back to the Wilds, Knox, the beaver, betrays them. As all seems lost, the cubs find an unlikely ally. In an ironic twist, Warrior learns that the white wolves hold his two sons as captives. An arrangement for a trade is made, but the dark wolves bring no white wolf cubs to the exchange; claiming they were taken by a lone black wolf in their camp. By the slip of a slingshot and a single stone, the war begins anew.

Book Summary:

Who makes your clothes? This used to be an easy question to answer: it was the seamstress next door, or the tailor on the high street – or you made them yourself. Today we rarely know the origins of the clothes hanging in our closets. The local shoemaker, dressmaker and milliner are long gone, replaced by a globalised fashion industry worth $1.5 trillion a year. In Wardrobe Crisis, fashion journalist Clare Press explores the history and ethics behind what we wear. Putting her insider status to good use, Press examines the entire fashion ecosystem, from sweatshops to haute couture, unearthing the roots of today’s buy-and-discard culture. She traces the origins of icons like Chanel, Dior and Hermès; charts the rise and fall of the department store; and follows the thread that led us from Marie Antoinette to Carrie Bradshaw. From a time when Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein were just two boys from the Bronx, to the world of the global fashion juggernaut, where Zara’s parent company produces more than 900 million garments annually, Press takes us on an insider’s journey of discovery and revelation. Wardrobe Crisis is a witty and persuasive argument for a fashion revolution that will empower you to feel good about your wardrobe again. Clare Press is Marie Claire’s fashion editor-at-large. She was previously the features director at Sunday Style and has worked as a fashion designer, brand consultant and editor, including stints as features director at Vogue, fashion critic at the Monthly and columnist at Instyle. Clare’s fashion journalism has been published in Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald, the New York Times Magazine and many more. Book Summary:

Transformation of the werewolf in literature made its greatest strides in the 19th century when the shape-shifting monster leapt from poetry to the short story. It happened when this shorter form of literature was morphing into darker shapes thanks in no small part to Edgar Allan Poe, Honore de Balzac, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Prosper Merimee, James Hogg, and so many others in Europe and the United States. The fifty year period between 1800 and 1849 is truly the cradle of all werewolf short stories. For the first time in one anthology, Andrew Barger has compiled the best werewolf stories from this period. The stories are "Hugues the Wer-Wolf: A Kentish Legend of the Middle Ages," "The Man-Wolf," "A Story of a Weir-Wolf," "The Wehr-Wolf: A Legend of the Limousin," and "The White Wolf of the Hartz Mountains." It is believed that two of these fine stories have never been republished in over one hundred and fifty years since their original printing. Read "The Best Werewolf Short Stories 1800-1849" tonight, just make sure it is not by the light of a full moon "

Book Summary:

S. A. Swann continues to reinvent the werewolf myth in this fantastic new novel set in the medieval world of the celebrated Wolfbreed. Like its predecessor, Wolf’s Cross is unafraid to cross boundaries and break taboos to tell an unforgettable story of romance and adventure that will forever change how you think about werewolves. Maria lives a simple life in a small Polish village, working for the lord of the nearby fortress. Motherless since birth, Maria has been raised by her father and stepmother. Around her neck she wears—as she has always worn—a silver crucifix, to protect her from the devil. Or so her father tells her. But when a contingent of badly mauled Teutonic knights, including a handsome and gravely wounded young man named Josef, ask for succor at the fortress, Maria’s quiet and comfortable world shatters. For the knights are Wolfjägers, an order dedicated to the extermination of werewolves, and Maria, unknowingly, is one of the creatures they hunt. Only the crucifix about her neck prevents her body from changing into a lethal killing machine. When Maria meets Darien, a wolfbreed bent on exacting a terrible revenge on humans, she will learn the truth about herself, and find her loyalties—and her heart—torn in two.

Book Summary:

I have written about seven stories that I put away and have occasionally revised. One story started when I was anchored alone in Viner Sound in 1996. I felt a presence on board that set off my imagination. The book contains the stories of six lives. Two half breeds, Matti Wilson (part Finish and part Indian) and Bessie David (part Kwakuutl Indian and part Chinese). Chief Joseph of the Koeksotenok in the village of Gwayasdums. Shaman Caring-well in the village (cousin of Matti) and shaman to Chief Bell of the Tsawatenok. Lad and Jojo (sons of Chief Bell) held captive at a secret Japanese radio base in Viner Sound during WWII and died there. Jojo had not been given the rites at burial that would send him to Transformer for reincarnation and his spirit is trapped in Viner Sound. Jojo's spirit possesses Matti and shows him how the boys died at the radio base. He asks Matti for assistance in releasing his spirit for passage to Transformer so that he can be reincarnated. The lives of these main characters are interwoven in the novel's narrative. The idea of spiritual possession was reinforced in 2002, when a Haida woman told me about her possession by the bad spirit of Hot Spring Island in the Gwai Hanas Park on the Queen Charlotte Islands. In 2012 I decided to self-publish, Strange Possesion at Viner Sound, to raise funds for my charities.

Book Summary:

Life in the Far Woods tends to be tranquil because the animal denizens are strictly forbidden to kill (or eat!) one another. An elderly detective, Chief Badger, oversees the community and solves its petty crimes, from stolen pine cones to plucked tail feathers. His restless assistant, Badgercat, longs for some excitement — a desperate crime, a beastly crime! The brash youngster's hopes are realized when some croaking frogs reveal the shocking news of Rabbit's murder. Wolf appears to be the most likely culprit, because — duh — he's a lone wolf without an alibi, but Badger refuses to jump to conclusions. With the help of Vulture the crime scene investigator, Mouse the psychologist, brave witness Beetlebug Buck, and other curious creatures, the woodland detectives set out to discover the truth. Newly translated from the original Russian, this fancifully illustrated volume is the first of a Beastly Crimes Books to come from this imaginative mystery series geared toward middle-grade readers. Look for the sequel, A Predator's Rights, also available from Dover Publications.
